Minimal Incision Surgery
Minimal incision surgery is a technique that has been available for at least 50 years. Originally, it was introduced to reduce the risk of infection, produce a more pleasing aesthetics, and reduce healing time.
Although this method of surgical correction is used by surgeons of all areas, it specifically offers a tremendous benefit when it comes to foot surgery. Dr. Randell Braun received training by one of the founders of this technique and has been performing bunion, hammertoe, bone spur removal, and a host of other surgeries utilizing and perfecting this method for 40 years.
Second opinions are highly recommended for most elective surgeries. Before undergoing a procedure that involves screws, wires, and metal plates, as well as a risk of general anesthesia, consider calling us. Learn about alternative surgical corrections for common foot problems.
Surgery
Surgical correction of a foot problem may be the ideal treatment for permanent relief. At Eastern Shore Foot Center PC, we offer in-office bunion corrections, which often require realignment of the bones via an osteotomy (surgical fracture). This is held in place with proper splints and bandaging and not internal hardware.
Many times, metal screws, wires, and plates have to be removed due to problems that may arise, which leads to further surgery. Although there are times when internal fixation is required, most often it is not. Each patient will be evaluated to their specific needs for a good outcome.
Most bone spurs can be simply removed through a small incision requiring only one stitch to close. This reduces post-operative infections and healing time significantly.
Hammertoes are corrected most often without wires and fixation devices. In some cases, a simple tendon release procedure can completely correct the deformity. We treat neuroma, ganglions, synovial cysts, ingrown nails, even foreign body excisions.
Heel Surgery
Surgical correction for plantar fasciitis is an in-office procedure. We use a plantar (bottom of foot approach) with a small incision that usually requires only one suture to close. The location of the incision is vital since this medial approach has a greater chance of causing nerve damage.
With the use of a fluoroscope, the surgery is much less invasive and debilitating. This approach has been utilized for over 25 years at our office and has brought lasting relief to hundreds of people suffering from plantar fasciitis.
Laser Treatment
Laser therapy is used primarily to manage pain and reduce swelling. This amazing modality increases circulation to an area thus reducing healing time, swelling, and pain.
This physical therapy is incorporated into our post-operative treatment to reduce edema, increase mobility, and accelerate healing. It can reduce inflammation associated with sprains and injuries. It can hasten the return of an injured foot to normal activities, including sports.
Non-Surgical Treatments
Not all foot problems require surgical intervention, and not all patients are surgical candidates. There are conservative treatments for most pathology, and at Eastern Shore Foot Center PC, we always consider non-invasive procedures first.
Often a functional orthotic (that is a custom insert) with proper modifications can alleviate pain from heels, bunions, metatarsals, arches, and ankles without any injections or surgical involvement. Often, nails that may thicken only need a reduction to alleviate shoe pressure.
Hammertoes with corns or lesions may need debridement and proper gel pads to avoid surgery. Burning and neuritis-type pain need evaluation, but many treatments help alleviate these conditions, including vitamins, laser, and vascular procedures that can revascularize the feet.
Podiatric pathology is too numerous to list, and it's important to understand that most foot pain may be treated and corrected when addressed early.
Orthotic Inserts
Functional orthotics are specialized support that goes inside a patient’s shoes. These orthotics are formed from an exact measurement that is created by a cast of the patient’s feet. These inserts are built off-site and are prescription medical devices that can treat a multitude of problems.
In some cases, accommodative orthotics are created from unique measurements of the foot but are pre-made inserts that cushion and support a foot. We offer both custom and pre-made inserts in Daphne, AL.
